Do’s and Don’ts of Pinup Photography

You’re all but ready for your pinup shoot. Here are a few do’s and don’ts you’ll want to consider before you go ahead with the shoot.

Do pick the right photographer

A good pinup photographer in Orange County will know how to make you feel at ease. It’s a good idea to check reviews. Yelp and Google reviews are a good place to start. You can also ask for references from other women who’ve had their boudoir or pinup photos done by the photographer.

Don’t go with loose fitting lingerie

While it’s good to wear clothes you’re comfortable in when having your hair and makeup done by the stylist, avoid lingerie that’s too loose on you. For example, “baby doll” lingerie does not work well because they fit very loosely, which can add about 20-30 pounds to any body type. While they seem to hide the curves, they’ll derail the shots. Clothing that fits snugly on you will showcase your curves better. The Lingerie Addict blog is a very good resource for different styles of lingerie stores so you may want to check that out. While you should invest in excellent lingerie for the photo shoot, good lingerie does not need to be expensive so keep that in mind.

Do your research

Do your research and find out what kind of shots appeal to you. Pinup photography is from the 1950s and is a very stylized type of boudoir photography. To make sure your Orange County photographer knows what you want, find photos you can use as a reference. That way, your photographer will have a better idea of the kind of vibe and atmosphere you want to see in the photographs.

Don’t eat too much

Avoid a heavy meal before you go to the session. Eating too much can make it difficult for you to bend and position yourself in ways that are not normal to you. A full tummy can make many of those sexy poses difficult so keep your meal light.

Do listen to your photographer

Learn how to listen and follow your photographer’s instructions during the shoot. A good pinup photographer in Orange County knows what to do to get the expression and pose that’s going to make for a killer shot.

Don’t forget the props

Props work great with pinup; however, they are different from each other. Pinup tends to be silly, like a telephone, pretty cocktail, sunglasses, beach ball, etc. However, you can try using props like feathers, masks, umbrellas, etc. For photography sessions, you may want to add that sexy elegance to your shoots by bringing along jewelry. Necklaces are particularly useful for bringing attention to the neckline and cleavage areas. That could result in a lot of playfully sexy touches in your photographs.

I wanted an urban feel for Mimi and Bradley’s shoot because they are a hip couple. Bradley also has an artistic edge and brought props. Abbot Kinney Boulevard and the Venice canals turned out to be the perfect locations. We also applied “bleach” Photoshop techniques on some of the images to give them a gritty feeling. Bradley’s a skateboarder so we did some fun blur effects. I like to add movement to a picture because it adds another visual dimension.

Corona Del Mar Engagement Session - Karen French Photography

We did Allyson and Logan’s engagement session in several locations. First started out at the Orange Circle, we stopped at their favorite bar, the liquor store Allyson’s parents own, Chapman College where Allyson goes to law school. From there went to Logan’s sister’s home in Corona Del Mar where we had a beautiful modern home to work with. I had photographed Logan’s sisters wedding several years ago. We had a great time with the shoot.

Peter plays in a mariachi band with his family and Tara is a traditional Mexican dancer. They also compete in their respective disciplines. We had fun incorporating these family customs into their engagement session, and the San Juan Capistrano Mission was the perfect backdrop. Our Photoshop effects highlight the beautiful details in their clothing.

One could not ask for a sweeter couple than Jenny and Aaron. Both have a heart of gold. Jenny’s convertible Bug was the get away car from Community Congregational Church in Corona del Mar. It gave us some fun photo ops. The tent wedding on the golf course at Oak Creek in Irvine was beautiful, especially as the sun set. Jenny’s two brothers did one of the funniest best man toasts I’ve ever heard.

Yoshihiro is a professional sports and celebrity photographer. During my career, I have shot over 40 weddings of professional photographers. In addition to Yoshihiro’s wedding this year, I also photographed a paparazzo and wedding photographer’s wedding. I enjoy working with people who are in the visual arts they are discerning and appreciate my technical and artistic talents. Another perk is that after shooting their weddings, we often become good friends!

What a wonderful wedding! Bren’s got a lot of fun energy and Ty is a Texas gentleman. Together, they make a nice balance. We moved around a lot that day, starting at their home, then to Community Congregational Church, then off to beautiful Big Canyon Country Club for the reception. Susan MacDonald kept everything flowing smoothly, which can be difficult with multi-location event. I loved the green linens that decorated the tables, provided by Wildflower Linen.
